Dana Michelle Bergstrom

Dana Bergstrom is an eminent Australian ecologist and international science leader. She has been based at the Australian Antarctic Division for the last two decades. Her specialty is applied Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecology, conducting extensive fieldwork across the region. With over 100 scientific publications, most of her research focuses on identifying and if possible, mitigating risks that threaten Antarctic and sub-Antarctic ecosystems. She recently led a ground-breaking study on combating ecosystem collapse from the tropics to the Antarctic, as well as documenting a record-breaking heatwave in Antarctica. These studies attracted national and international media attention, and transcended into Australian cultural space. She was the winner of the 2021 Eureka Prize for Leadership in Innovation and Science (one of Australia’s top science prizes). Her research informs the book. Her arts practice has been in sculpture, art doll-making and writing for music theatre (Books ANTARCTICA, A PRETTY SONG FOR YOU) and was the assistant puppet maker on the 2016 production of ANTARCTICA.
